                                                     Important Dates

August 1, 2024:  Academic Achievement is due unless you fall under one of the exceptions listed in #4 under Procedure for Homeschool.

August 15, 2024:  Notice of Intent (NOI) form or you may write a letter to notify the superintendent of your intent to homeschool and any accompanying documentation is due.

The law states that "Any parent who moves into our school division or begins home instruction after the school year has begun shall notify the division superintendent of his intention to provide home instruction as soon as practicable and shall thereafter comply with the requirements of this section within 30 days of such notice."

                                                Procedure for Homeschool

1.  Complete the Notice of Intent (NOI) form or you may write a letter to notify the superintendent of your intent to homeschool (scroll down for fillable NOI form if desired).

2.  Select one option and then provide the accompanying documentation it requires.

3.  Provide a subject list that you will be teaching.

4.  If you homeschooled the previous year, provide academic achievement unless one of the following applies:

*  Moves out of the public school district or state;

*  Has reached his/her 18th birthday;

*  Has obtained a high school diploma;

*  Is under the age of six as of September 30th of the school year; and

*  Is complying with compulsory attendance through a different compliance option.

                                                Evidence of Achievement

1.  Evidence that the child has attained a composite score in or above the fourth stanine on any nationally normed standardized achievement test; or an equivalent score on the ACT, SAT, or PSAT test; or

2.  An evaluation or assessment which the school division superintendent determines to indicate that the child is achieving an adequate level of educational growth and progress, including, but not limited to:
     a.  an evaluation letter from a person licensed to teach in any state, or a person with a master's degree or higher in an academic discipline, or having knowledge of the child's academic progress; or
     b.  a report card or transcript from a community college, college distance learning program, or home-education correspondence school.

Students' score reports on the ACT, SAT, or PSAT test may not contain scores expressed in stanines.  However, percentile scores are usually reported.  A percentile score of 23 or above is equivalent to a score at or above the fourth stanine.  Thus, students who obtain a national composite score at or above a percentile score of 23 have met the requirement for academic achievement.  (Home Instruction Handbook; Virginia Department of Education 2023).

As a courtesy, please contact me if your student graduated, moved out of the county or has enrolled in a private school so that I can remove your student/family from my homeschool list.

There is the availability of the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) and Advanced Placement (AP) test for homeschool students through New Kent County Public Schools.  Offered to high school students, the tests are optional, with a fee for each test.  The PSAT is offered in October and the AP testing is offered in April.  Please contact New Kent High School (804) 966-9675 four weeks in advance, for specific information and scheduling assistance.
